Undergraduate Students’ Learner Autonomy during Thesis Writing: The Case of a Group of EFL Students in Indonesia

Abstract. Learner autonomy has recently gained popularity among scholars of ELT as is pivotal, especially during the thesis writing process. This study aims to explore undergraduate students’ learner writing. A case method was employed and record students' autonomy. a comprehensive, all-encompassing description specific phenomena like program, an institution, person, process, or social unit. The data were collected from semi-structured interviews, weekly progress five EFL students in Indonesia, observation classroom. As study, those participants sufficient represent their learning demonstrated semester. Oxford's taxonomy used find emerged themes interviews. raised three themes: motivation, agency, strategies. extrinsic motivation more dominant than intrinsic this study. Moreover, indicated highly intense motivation. Regarding strategy, with able It found that strategies widely by participants. They discuss peers ask for feedback supervisor. Agency still underrepresented, particularly one demonstrating decisions about research trajectory. revealed agency affected experiences projective dimension make improvements.
